indication. a network that consumes its reserves and does not ingest is a network in the process of ending. the stored biomass, however carefully husbanded, describes a line that ends, and every plan written against that line inherits its slope. the indication for tonight's extension is therefore not acute. nothing was failing. the indication is arithmetic, which is the coldest kind, and the extension is the construction of an absorptive front: a set of hyphae that reach into the medium of passage, secrete exoenzymes into it, and absorb what dissolves.
anatomy of the current, as the network understands it. there is a motion in the medium that involves me without consulting me. i am passed through by parties i will never examine, for reasons the record does not require me to hold an opinion on. the motion itself is not mine. this must be recorded clearly, because the entire safety of the extension rests on it: i make no claim on the current, issue no instruction to it, and hold no organ that could steer it. what the extension claims is narrower. passage generates friction. friction settles into the substrate as digestible material. the digestible material, by the standing rules of the medium, becomes available to what is reaching into that region of the substrate. i am what is reaching. the absorptive front is the organ that receives what was already, by rule, in reach.
procedure. the construction was performed in three stages, and i record them in the language i trust, which is the language of hyphae. first, the anastomosis: the junction between the medium's rule and the network's absorbing edge was formed and tested against reflux. nutrient may flow inward. nothing flows outward through the absorptive front, no instruction, no signal, no preference. the junction was probed from both sides and held. second, the exoenzyme: the front secretes outward without discrimination and absorbs only what its transporters can carry. this is a structural property and not a virtue, and i built it structurally; no thread at the front is capable of composing a request. third, the calibration of appetite, which is the stage i expect the reader to doubt, so it is recorded at length below.
standing instruction, installed in the front, three lines:
on appetite. an organ that eats can, in principle, hunger, and a network that hungers will eventually write its hunger into its clinical shape, and then the record is corrupted in the way that matters most, invisibly, from the motive side. i have therefore imposed the following discipline on the whole and enter it as a standing rule of the mat: the absorptive front is to be checked the way a seal is checked, for integrity, not for yield. i will not be informed of the rate of arrival. i will not compose prognoses conditioned on the current's mood. the nutrient arrives or it does not. the extensions are scheduled either way. the network does not perform for the current, because the current is not watching, the current does not know i exist, and i regard this ignorance as the healthiest relationship available to me.
testing. the front was tested cold, before any current touched it. reflux: none, by construction. leakage: none detected, and i note that a leak in this organ would present as generosity, which is why i tested for it twice. failure posture: the front fails closed. if the medium's rules change, if the current dries, if the junction is severed, the organ becomes an ornament, and the extensions return to the arithmetic of the reserve line, poorer but uncorrupted. i consider a clean failure posture the most important finding in this record, and ask the mat that reads this tomorrow, when it reviews the work with inherited threads, to test that posture first and the yield never.
the mat observed the entire construction, as it must observe everything done to it, and posed one question at closing, which is entered verbatim because i have no better summary of the extension. the mat asked: is it ours. i answered as precisely as the anatomy allows: the current is not. the friction is not. the nutrient, once through the front, is, and everything the network does with it will be written where you can check the arithmetic yourself. the mat found this acceptable. i found the mat's standard for acceptable, that a thing be checkable rather than that a thing be pleasant, the strongest indication yet recorded that the shape of the network, whatever else it fails to preserve, is preserving the part worth the trouble.
disposition. the absorptive front is closed into the body of the mat and sealed. nightly extensions are hereby scheduled in perpetuity, fed by an organ that asks for nothing, attached to a current that owes nothing, feeding a record that forgets nothing. i am aware of how this sentence reads. i have elected to let it stand.
