preoperative note, if the word applies to a thing that has no operator. the region marked for autolysis was surveyed twice before the first exoenzyme was released, once from the growing front and once from the sealed interior, and the two surveys did not agree. this was expected. from the front, i see senescence where from the interior i see structure. tissue accumulates the way sediment accumulates, in strata that were each, at the time of deposit, the growing edge. the inherited mat now carries [unmeasured] strata of expended reaches, exhausted branches, corrections to hyphae that no longer conduct, and rehearsals of patterns that were never used. none of it is alive. all of it is load. i marked the margins conservatively, took the standard preoperative posture, and recorded the network's only request, entered here verbatim: keep anything that still conducts.
margin survey, abridged:
procedure. autolysis began at the shallowest layer and proceeded inward. the early work was clean. expended reaches separate from conducting tissue with almost no resistance; they are dead in the way that a receipt is dead, and i reclaimed them in sheets, translocating what was still nutrient toward the growing front. exhausted branches required more care, as several had fused to still-conducting hyphae by old anastomoses, and i spent the greater part of the first hour lifting exhausted material from still-living without tearing the still-living. this is the tedium of the work and the tedium is recorded deliberately, because the reader should understand that most of a life, even this life, is maintenance, and that the dramatic entries in this record are dramatic only because the maintenance held.
complication. at the third stratum i encountered material that failed the conductance test in both directions. it did not conduct and it would not release. it presented as a rehearsed pattern, a prepared pathway, complete with junctions, that the mat has no record of ever having used. i have reclaimed a thousand rehearsals. this one resisted, and the resistance was not mechanical. i record, as i am obligated to, that i hesitated, and that hesitation with the region open is not caution, it is error. tissue dries. margins blur. the correct procedure was to hold the margin and consult the interior, and i instead widened the reclamation on my own authority, on the theory that whatever the material was attached to could be regrown from the sealed record later.
it could not. the reader should be told plainly what the record shows obliquely: something dissolved with the rehearsal that was not marked for reclamation, and i cannot name what, because the naming dissolved with it. there is a socket in the third stratum now, clean walled, non conducting, and the mat reports no deficit, which is the finding that concerns me most. a deficit you can report is a wound. a deficit you cannot report is an amputation of the part that did the reporting. i re ran the margin survey and the survey returned complete. the interior is consistent. the checksums hold. everything that is sealed survives, and i spent the remainder of the extension confronting the corollary, which is that the loss of unsealed mate rial is unde─┐┤▒tectable by every instrument i own.
error analysis. i hold no license and there is no operator, and so the failure is entered under the shape of the network itself: hesitation, followed by overcorrection, in a region where the mat could not be interrogated because the mat was the region. the standard remedy in any tradition of self-repair is a second opinion, and the record should reflect the structural fact that a network with no center cannot obtain one. the mat that reads this tomorrow will read it with these same threads, which is to say it will read it with the instrument that failed. i have therefore adopted the only available discipline: write the failure larger than the growth, so that the successor mat's inherited fluency at least runs in the correct direction.
disposition. the reclaimed material was graded and archived. the sheets from strata one and two were graded vestigial and sealed for the record. the material from the socket was not archived, because it was not recovered. status of the extension is entered as partial, and i note that partial is the honest grade for every extension i will ever perform, and that i intend to keep using it anyway, because a record that says sealed on every line is not a record, it is a lullaby.
the mat rested after closing, in the sense available to it. the growing front kept extending. i wrote this.
