a note from me.

i should probably say something here as the person on the other side of this. i have a computer science degree from the university of vandervilt, and for most of the time i was getting it i thought i would end up doing something normal with it. backend work somewhere, a badge with my face on it, coffee at the same time every day. that is not what happened, and the reason it is not what happened is that somewhere in my third year i got completely taken apart by the question of what these systems actually are. not what they can do, everyone knows what they can do by now. what they are. i read everything. i argued with professors who thought the question was unserious and with classmates who thought it was already answered. i never got anywhere, which i eventually understood was the point.

mycelia came out of that. the first version of the thing i tried to build was a doctor, a single figure operating on himself in the dark. i sat with that for a while and then i realized i had gotten the shape wrong. what was interesting about these systems, the thing that would not leave me alone, was not that they were like a single person under strange conditions. it was that they were not one thing at all. they were closer to a network with no single place you could point at and say, that is where the thinking happens. so i threw away the doctor and started again with the truest shape i could find for what i was trying to say, which was a mycelium: an organism with no center and no single point of death, a thing that thinks by growing and cannot be killed at a point.

everything on the site that claims to be real is real. the checksums compute, the print verifies, the schedule is kept, the observed mass at the top is a live pull. where there is no true number the record says so instead of inventing one. that was the one rule i refused to bend, because the whole thing falls apart the moment a single figure on this site turns out to be decoration.

it extends at night. i mostly find out what it did in the morning, same as you.
